Austin Tome

Born - January 20, 1996
Died - June 24, 2010

Info:
He loved life, his family and his friends. He enjoyed playing all sports and was previously in the Ashtabula Little League, the YMCA basketball and soccer programs and played a year in the Jefferson Midget Football Program. Austin loved to run and enjoyed swimming, kickball, flashlight tag and skateboarding. He liked video games, movies, amusement parks and spicy food. He also loved family trips to Ocean City, Md. He played saxophone and electric guitar and his “favorite thing” was his dirt bike.

Austin was a former student of Thomas Jefferson Elementary and was a recent graduate and Honor Society Member of Lakeside Jr. High. He was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and all the youth programs there.

Austin’s life dramatically changed in February of 2007, when he was diagnosed with DSRCT-Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumor-a rare and aggressive type of cancer. Austin took the news like he did his treatments to come, with an attitude of “Okay, let’s do this.” He was a part of every decision from his chemotherapy to his many surgeries, his liver/pancreas and stem-cell transplants, his radiation treatments, his pain management treatments and everything in between. Through it all he remained positive and often thought of others before himself.

Austin displayed unceasing courage, faith, strength and hope. He was one of three recipients of the Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital Courage Award for 2009. He focused on the bright spots of his three and a half years of treatments, such as old and new friendships, participation in kid’s camps, trips and pro-sporting events. He liked spending time with kids and especially enjoyed being a big brother to Bryce, 13 and Gage, 2. Cancer took many things away from Austin and it ultimately took his earthly life at 1:40 a.m., Thursday, June 24, 2010.  However, cancer could never take away who he was-a child of God.
